Social Media in Law Enforcement

Sam Palmer has worked for the Phoenix Police Department since 1995 and has served as a uniformed patrol officer, a field training officer, precinct crime analysis officer, and in the Police Departments Crime Analysis and Research Unit where he was the tactical crime analyst.  Detective Palmer is currently assigned to the Intelligence Center in the Homeland Defense Bureau where he is working in the real-time crime center and is responsible for social media related investigations and events. He was named the state of Arizona’s top analyst in 2010 and most recently International Social Media Investigator 2013.

Detective Palmer is proficient in the use of social media sites and open source information and uses them as an investigative tool for his research to locate offenders. Detective Palmer has been using the internet and specifically social media for the past 13 years to help with several different types of investigations. Detective Palmer is an instructor for the Othniel Group LLC, the National Gang Center, Lexis Nexis, and California POST. He has been a speaker at several local and international conferences to include the SMILE Conference, International Association of Crime Analysts, Arizona Association of Crime Analyst, International Association of Chiefs of Police, California Crime Intelligence Association, and several regional gang conferences to include the Midwest Gang Investigators Association, California Gang Investigators Association, and the Northwest Gang Investigators Association.
